SEO for contractors and roofers: more jobs from Google

Where contractors win jobs on Google
The map pack. For “roofer near me” and “general contractor [town]” Google shows three companies on a map. Your Business Profile, reviews and distance decide who is there.
Organic results. Searches for a specific job, such as “metal roof installation” or “foundation repair cost”, go to the company with the best page for that job and area.
AI answers. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions like “how much does a roof replacement cost” and name companies as sources.
What the contractor SEO plan includes
Technical SEO: indexing, speed with large photo galleries, mobile layout, titles, redirects and internal links.
Service pages: one page per profitable job, with process, price factors, materials and matching projects.
Town pages: only for towns where you work, each with real jobs and photos from that town.
Google Business Profile: primary and secondary categories, services, photos of real jobs, posts and questions and answers.
Reviews: a routine to ask at the end of every job, with a direct link, and replies to every review.
Citations and links: the same name, address and phone in the directories homeowners use, and links from suppliers, manufacturers and local associations.
Schema markup: RoofingContractor or GeneralContractor, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList, tested in Google's Rich Results test.
AI search: short answers to the questions homeowners ask, consistent facts and an llms.txt file. See generative engine optimization.
Roofing SEO: what is different
“SEO for roofers” is the largest search in this niche for a reason. Roofing demand follows storms and seasons, many jobs involve insurance claims, and homeowners compare warranties and manufacturer certifications. A roofing site needs pages for inspections, storm and hail damage, insurance claims, financing and each roof type you install, and the Business Profile should show fresh photos of real jobs every month.
The first three months
Month
What happens
1
Audit of the site, the Business Profile and the three companies that outrank you. Technical fixes. Tracking of calls and quote requests.
2
New or rewritten pages for the jobs that pay best. Business Profile work and the review routine starts.
3
Town pages with real projects, citations and local links. First full report with clicks, calls and quote requests.
What I will not do
No one can promise the first spot, and I do not. No bought links, no fake reviews and no town pages that only swap the city name. Those shortcuts can get a profile suspended or a site filtered out, and recovering takes longer than doing it right.
How it works
Audit. Search Console, your Business Profile, the site and the companies that outrank you.
Plan. The jobs and towns to focus on, the pages to write and the fixes, in order of value.
Fixes and pages. Technical fixes first, then service and town pages, schema and internal links.
Map pack and reviews. Business Profile work, citations and a review routine your crew can run.
Monthly report. Clicks, calls, quote requests and rankings, plus next month's plan.
Contractor websites and an SEO case study
Two live construction company sites built with service and area pages, and an SEO case with numbers from Google Search Console.
It is a monthly plan with a fixed price in writing and a minimum of three months. The price depends on the number of services and towns and how competitive your market is.
How long does roofing SEO take?
Technical fixes and Business Profile work can show within weeks. Ranking for competitive jobs in a large metro area usually takes several months.
What is the difference between SEO and Local Services Ads?
Local Services Ads are paid per lead and show above other results for many trades. SEO builds rankings in the map pack and organic results that you do not pay for per click. Many contractors use both, and tracking shows the cost per job from each.
Do you work with HVAC, plumbing and other trades?
Yes, the method works for any trade that serves a local area. The examples on this page are construction companies, and I tell you up front what I have and have not done before.
Do you optimize for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
Yes. Short, factual answers to homeowners' questions, schema markup and consistent facts across the web make it easier for AI assistants to quote your company.
Do I need a new website first?
No. We start with the site you have. If it blocks rankings, you get a list of fixes with a price, and contractor website design covers a rebuild if that is cheaper.
I have worked with ads on Google, Meta and TikTok for more than seven years and personally managed ad budgets from $1,000 a day up to $50,000 a month. For the last two years I have built websites, automations and AI assistants with AI every day. I work remotely with clients in Norway and abroad, and every number on this page comes from a project you can open in the case studies. LinkedIn
